You have to achieve at least 50% of the exercise points in order to be allowed to take the exam.
The outcome of the final exam determines your grade, not the exercises.

Information regarding the final exam (for students of ETH and UZH):

The exam will take place on 20 January 2011, at Oerlikon in room BIN 0.K.02 and will start at 10:00 sharp. Please make sure that you will arrive at least 15 minutes earlier.

The exam is closed book, so the only admitted tools on your desks are:

  • Pens (no red colors, no pencils!)
  • Rulers
  • Additional writing paper (will be distributed by the supervisors, don't bring your own!)
  • Drinks and food
  • Student ID (for identification purposes)


Tools that are NOT allowed and will result in a failure of the exam:

  • Bags, cases, folders and other containers
  • Own writing papers, writing blocks, etc.
  • Calculator, mobile phones and other devices


Additional Information

  • The exam will last 90 minutes
  • The exam will consist of contents from:
    • Chapters 1-8 and 10-12 from the book “How the body shapes the way we think” (Pfeifer and Bongard)
    • Chapters 5 and 8 (without section 8.6) from "Understanding Intelligence" (available on the Exercises page)
    • All slides used in the lectures and discussion sessions, including the "additional slides for self-study"
    • All materials used in the exercises
    • Guest lecture by Serge Kernbach (can be found here)
    • Guest lecture by Rafael Núñez (can be found here)
    • The paper "Minds, Brains, Programs" by John Searle
    • Fig. 1 (including the caption) from the Science paper (can be found here)
  • The exam will have multiple choice as well as open questions (approximately a ratio of 2:1)
  • Please tag all your exam papers that you want to hand in with your name and student ID
  • Please use a new sheet of paper for each question answered
  • Please do not use any red colored pens (the use of it will result in a deduction of points)
  • Cheating will result in a failure of the exam without any warnings
  • An early hand-in of the exam will only be accepted during the first 75 minutes
  • After 90 minutes all students have to remain quiet and seated until all exams have been collected
