Research

My main research is in the field of physical and biological self-assembly and its connection to information technology and evolution.

Self-assembly enables the construction of long range order from local interactions. By exploiting emerging patterns, logical aspects of a problem can be transferred into geometrical ones. As an example, in case of digital circuitry, we showed that self-assembly enables the evolution of scalable devices (such as multipliers) by induction from a limited set of test problems.

An important aspect of biological self-assembly is the softness of the individual components. Presently, we are studying the advantages and limitations of self-assembling multivesicualr systems, in theory as well as in experiment.
